Issue 16

When an email from one of the world’s most important graphic & visual artists announces, “I am sending you a thought I have for your next cover”, there’s nothing to do other than open the champagne. After 10 years of visiting, emailing, haranguing and persisting, my absolute hero Milton Glaser had finally caved! Creator of the “I HEART NY” logo over 40 years ago as well as New York Magazine and countless other visual identities, Glaser is an icon of the design world. Milton’s kindness and generosity have been boundless, and with this being the undisputed highlight of my career, I can’t think of a better way to celebrate The Covent Gardener turning 4 years old. In honour of Milton, this ‘Fall’ issue aims to celebrate all the many American connections here in Covent Garden.

As always you’ll find a few features that might raise an eyebrow or two… Did you know that for 16 years we had one of the founding fathers of America living here? Partial to a spot of ‘air bathing’, Benjamin Franklin would sit stark naked by his floor to ceiling window every morning, believing as he did in the healing qualities of fresh air. I hope none of our neighbours get any ideas…

We also sent Mick O’Hare off to Washington to interview Teasel Muir-Harmony, the curator of the Apollo spacecraft collection at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, where he finds out first hand about a very special cocktail made especially for Neil Armstrong by Covent Gardener Joe Gilmore, head barman at the Savoy in the 1960s. Elsewhere you’ll find fascinating pieces on classic burgers, American churches and even tap dance.

We are also incredibly excited to be partnering with the Royal Opera House, and will be bringing you the latest shows and insider news each issue.

I’m always hitting the streets and exploring new corners of the area, so if you see me out and about, don’t be shy!
